Ensuite Vs Master Bathroom | What Are the Key Differences?

I’m sure I’m not alone when I say I watch a lot of home renovation programs on TV. The majority of these programs that many of us love to watch are from other countries around the world, Grand Designs for example which so many of us can't get enough of. The one noticeable difference with these homes as opposed to the majority of our homes here in Australia is the “Master Bathroom”.

Our home designs typically have a Master Bedroom with an Ensuite Bathroom and the Main Bathroom is in another area of the home. Now when you think about this it really doesn't make a lot of sense. An ensuite bathroom is in most cases a much smaller room yet this is the bathroom that the home owners, which are the people who will live in the home the longest use every day. The main bathroom on the other hand is typically for guests and children who eventually leave home.

The concept of a Master bedroom and bathroom makes far more sense, this should be the larger more luxurious of the bathrooms in the home. A place where the homeowner can relax and take that soak in the bath.

When I think about my own situation, I am the mother of three sons and the main bathroom in our home was in between the boys bedrooms. This bathroom was the larger bathroom with the deep soaker bath tub and my ensuite was smaller with the standard shower, vanity and toilet. The thought of taking a long soak in the bath with some bubble bath, candles and a glass of wine never occurred to me as the thought of doing that with teenage boys and their friends around wasnt that appealing.

I think the concept of a Master Bathroom instead of an Ensuite is one we should try to achieve. A beautiful Master Bathroom with a freestanding bath, large walk in shower, double vanity with plenty of storage, underfloor heating, feature lighting and floor to ceiling tiling is definitely a room I could see myself putting bubbles in the bath and in the glass!

There are ways to achieve this in existing homes, you can combine an existing ensuite and walk in robe to create the space for a Master Bathroom with new cabinets installed into another area of the bedroom for storage. Alternatively there may be a way to incorporate an adjoining room to create the Master Suite consisting of bedroom, bathroom and dressing room.

Anything is possible!
