The laundry is often the forgotten room in the house but one of the most important. Homes built years ago had very little thought put into the laundry, it is generally a small room built on the side of the home that attracts little natural light. They generally had a laundry trough and cabinet unit, space for the washing machine to sit and occasionally a small cupboard.
With the popularity of front loading washing machines the modern design for a laundry has a large bench with a drop in laundry sink, a space under the bench for the washing machine and if space allows also the dryer.
The laundry renovation is where you can add a few key elements such as a statement mixer or mosaic tiles without breaking the bank. The average cost for a full laundry renovation is generally in the range of $13,000 to $20,000. The transformation of an old laundry to a new design will most definitely add significant value to your home not to mention how it will enhance your everyday life.
A well designed laundry, whether its a large room or a small european laundry can create a functional space that not only works well for the home owners but also looks beautiful.
Possible inclusions:
- Added bench space - Bench with space under for appliances, cupboards or pull out laundry hamper.
- Storage - Including overhead cupboards, linen cupboard, broom cupboard or custom design to suit individual needs.
- Open shelving - Shelving can be added beside the overhead cupboards or run the full length above the bench. This is where you can sit plants or items such as canisters for washing powders and so on.
- Built in ironing centres - Built in ironing centres are a great space saving idea. They have built in lights and power, space for the iron and everything stores away neatly within the cabinet.
- Feature tiles - Using a feature mosaic or coloured tile adds a touch of luxury to the space. As this is generally just installed to the splashback it won’t blow the budget by any significant amount.
- Statement fittings - This in most cases is only a sink mixer and possibly a towel rail so this is where you can go for something such as a colour like matt black or brass, alternatively a pull out spray mixer is also very useful in the laundry.
- Hanging space - A hanging rod installed under the overhead cupboards gives you somewhere to hang delicate items while they dry or shirts after ironing. There are also other types of pull out or fold down hanging racks that can also be used.
- Skylight - Adding a simple cost effective solatube skylight will add additional light to the space.
- Lighting - Lighting in the laundry has in the past been given very little thought. Just by upgrading to a couple of LED downlights will improve the light dramatically. Also including LED strip lighting which can be attached to a sensor not only looks beautiful but is all that is needed to drop off dirty laundry, wash your hands or empty the washing machine.
